History
TMoT is an amalgamation of land blocks. The amalgamation took place over a period of years and included some 63 individual land blocks. There was an exchange of land between the owners and the Crown where tracks of land that were in native forest were exchanged for forestable land and finance to implement the forest.
Meetings of owners between 1969 and 1972 directed the TWMTB to investigate possible use of the land where the deal of exchange for forestable land and financial support from the Crown eventuated. There were 160 owners at the meeting held in April 1972 where the owners expressed a desire to have the TWMTB appointed trustees of the TMT.
Land Use
The land comprises Pine forests under lease to:
- OTPP NZ Forests Investments Limited (which is managed by Hancock Management NZ Limited);
- Her Majesty the Queen (Crown Forestry); and
- Under a forestry right held by Fund 6 Global LLC (which is managed by GMO Renewable Resources).
Also the Ahimanawa compartment of TMOT was reserved from being leased out and both the trees and land are owned by the Board/beneficial owners of TMoT.
